25 days to Nepal.

For the last ten years or so it has been difficult to visit Nepal because of the Maoist presence there. The Maoists have never been violent and they are far from a terrorist group but they do feel intimidating. They approach you during the trek and ask for a contribution to their party. If you pay, you are cordially thanked, but you get the feeling that non-payment is not an option.

This said in the last year a massive overhaul of the government has taken place. By a vast majority and overwhelming popularity to the local people of Nepal, the Maoists and their leader Prachanda have been “voted” into power. They have eliminated the previous monarchy and are rebuilding their political identity.

I wish Nepal the best.
